Lesions of more than 1-2 cms (Re. 1 coin) removed by surgical excision and covered by skin graft for healing
This is needed only in <2% cases and it is done when the biopsy area is large or very deep, requiring the surgeon to remove the biopsy tissue and surrounding boundaries. In such cases the skin cannot heal on its own and needs tissue from other parts to help in healing. In these cases skin grafts of partial or full thickness would be needed. Discuss this with our surgeon openly to fully understand the need and implications of skin graft after mole removal.
The cost of skin biopsy is driven by surgeon cost and lab cost for doing the biopsy. If the biopsy area is very large, then the cost increases as the procedure time increases and additional steps of sutures and skin graft get added.
Yes. There are additional costs, especially if the biopsy result is positive or points to the need for more diagnostic tests. In this case our surgeon might ask for additional and advanced pathology tests on the biopsy tissue. Also, the surgeon may ask for additional tests such as x-ray or sonography to see if there are other problems in the nearby area.
If the results are negative, generally there might not be additional costs.
Skin biopsies are not straightforward from an insurance perspective. Insurance companies may not necessarily reimburse the biopsy, especially if the results are negative.
